3...2...1...ACTION

 Action Genre

Why I chose action

When reflecting upon my life and how devoid it is of film I went deep within my own mind to remember what little movies I remember. I never grew up to be fascinated by film production because I'm more of a sports guy. But there are times where I could sit down and enjoy a movie or two with my family whether that be in our home or at the movie theater. But for the genre of the movie sticks out clearly juxtapose to all other genres would be action.

Now, what is Action?

Action is when the protagonist or antagonist is challenged or put through a series of events that build character development thought the story to fulfill their aim or get one step closer to achieving or accomplishing their goal.

A great example of this would be Eren (Image above) from the anime called "Attack on Titans." After going through a series of unfortunate events as a young child from having to murder two agents to save the life of a young girl, and having to witness his mother's death in front of his very own eyes. These series of events as a young child drove him to become a powerful machine-driven to avenge his other's death by killing every single titan that he comes across that is seeking to ruin a human life. The character known as Eren went through multiple stages of trauma and training to become a hero to the human race within the anime world.

Content

The use of weapons is heavily relied on within the action genre. Weapons can range from a variety of different things, shapes, or sizes. One person, the weapon could be their fist (One punch man) where he kills every monster with one punch or the use of guns like Deadshot from the movie suicide squad.

The setting is an enormous part of action genres. The setting helps develop where the action will take place. Some examples of this are open spaces like Deserts, forests, abandon parking lot. Or within close or confined spaces like office buildings or inside a house. The whole story doesn't take place within this one setting but where the action takes place will be clear from the suspense build up right before it.

The protagonist (good guy) usually is clear from the very start when the plot. For example, the protagonist may be the main character in which he fights off bad guys for the sake of humanity or for what he believes in. While the antagonist (bag guy) would be the one going against the tide where he finds the destruction of cities amusing or is causing chaos and he must be defeated.

Violence in the action genre is important to develop the action part of the action genre. Violence can come in many forces from cars to weapons to futuristic weapons The violence represents the battle between the forces of good or evil depending on the perspective in which the movie took place. The final battle adds suspense to the whole film because although the plot is usually the protagonist wins the audience is still on the edge of their seats because of the intense fighting going on in front of them.

Production

One example of a product used within almost every action movie from the past two decades would be special effects. The use of special effects is used to draw the audience's attention and create a more mundane feel within the story. Not all special effects have to be explosions in action movies.

For example

Avatar

The use of sound is almost just as important to action movies as bees are to human life. The use of sound develops emotions and the mood within the film. The use of suspenseful music can develop that an action scene or fighting scene will commence soon. Foley sounds develop sound effects within the scenes as well because the sound is not natural from the product it must be made by foley producers to recreate the sound of water it is they are trying to create. For example, the music or tone developed from Jumanji is a great example of music used to develop the beginning of an action scene.

Marketing

When developing the film the producers are more than often targeting teens and young adults for them to watch their piece of media. When producing trailers for movies they use scenes from the movie to develop a sense of adrenalin from the brain and connectivity making you feel like "I want to watch it." This is developed through the use of commercials. Although we wish to see what the whole movie is about in the trailer the only pieces being shown are small skits of the whole piece which aren't enough making the viewer come back to finish the whole movie because it left them feeling as if they're in an eternal cliff hanger. And many of my family and friends have as well felt this before when going to the cinema and watching those trailers makes you want to actually come back to finish it because it looks "interesting."

(It is imperative to know most action movies are for those over the ages of 13 (Pg 13) or older for those movies rated R (or M for mature) as some scenes may be too much for some viewers to handle. Viewer discretion is always advised as well as should always be followed).

Samples:

Sample 1:Fast and the furious

The fast and furious film series is a great example of action within a plot. The Movie fast five relies heavily on violence, weapons, cars, and stunt jumps along with special effects. All this put together creates a great piece of media. With the use of highspeed races and driving to get away from the police after a heist to steal from the federal reserves in brazil in diesel and his crew make an outstanding get away with a pitch of luck.

Sample 2:Transformers

Transformer incorporates into their film alien weapons and robots along with military reinforcement to fight against other alien robots. The use of special effects and lots of explosions helps develop the genre of action within the whole film. the destruction of cities and monuments like the pyramids of Egypt develop how the action is truly developed within the film.
